SPECIAL EFFECTS 101 COURSE: DESTINATION II
162.5 Hours / 5 weeks FT, 8 weeks PT
The Special Effects 101 Course was created for those who can think outside the box and have a passionate desire to work with special effects makeup. This 162.5 hour course incorporates daily projects and skill-building sessions, to encourage learning by practice through hands on repetition.
The student will learn injury simulation, bald caps, hair application and old age makeup. Additionally, this course focuses on the fundamental elements in the lab on formulation techniques that are required to design and create extreme single-piece character makeup and creatures using casting, molding, construction and application techniques. Students will learn prosthetic application with a focus on the details of prosthetic appliance development. The course takes students through the phases of project conceptualization and prosthetic application, including design, sculpture, molding, formulation of foam latex, as well as painting, and applying prosthetic pieces. As part of the course, students will be using all of their knowledge learned throughout the course to design and build a full face and neck appliance complete with a set of teeth to create their own ultimate creature captured digitally in our photo studio for the student to use in his or her portfolio.
Upon successful completion, the student will be prepared to work as an entry-level make-up artist. Fields requiring makeup artists with this type of training include, but are not limited to: film & television production, theatre, freelance, Halloween haunted houses, motion picture, video, amusement parks.

Creation of bald caps using latex, application process, customizing your cap, introduction to PAX and painting bald caps.
- Teeth molding – 15 hrs
How to take impressions and mixing monomer and powder.
- Hair Application – 6.5 hrs
Using a hair hackle, steaming hair, hair application, beard application.
- Injury simulation – 6.5 hrs
Burns, cuts, bruises, wounds, prosthetic application.
- Old Age Makeup – 6.5 hrs
How to stretch and stipple, wrinkle application, age marks, hair graying.
- Life Casting – 6.5 hrs
How to create life cast using Alginate.
- Sculpting and molding – 73 hrs
How to create a realistic surface, movement and expression, various techniques on how to sculpt different looks with different tools, molding, cutting edges, flashing.
- Mixing and pouring, baking – 6.5 hrs
How to mix Alginate, creating pros-aid transfers, latex appliances.
- Application -12 hrs
Prepping for an prosthetic application, edge work and color, proper placement, proper removal.
